When is UPSC Prelims 2027?
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has fixed the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2027 for 23 May 2027. The same day is also the Indian Forest Service preliminary test, because both use the same Prelims paper.
| Event | Date (UPSC calendar 2027) |
|---|---|
| Notification and online application opens | 13 January 2027 |
| Last date to apply | 2 February 2027 |
| Civil Services Prelims 2027 | 23 May 2027 (Sunday) |
| Civil Services Mains 2027 | From 20 August 2027 |
| Indian Forest Service Mains 2027 | From 21 November 2027 |
UPSC says these dates “are liable to alteration”, so always check the final notification on upsc.gov.in before you apply.
What is the UPSC Prelims exam pattern?
| GS Paper I | CSAT (GS Paper II) | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 80 |
| Marks | 200 (2 each) | 200 (2.5 each) |
| Time | 2 hours | 2 hours |
| Negative marking | One-third of the marks for that question | One-third of the marks for that question |
| Role | Merit: the cut-off is set on this paper | Qualifying: 33% needed |
Prelims is only a screening test. Its marks are not added to your final score, but missing the GS cut-off by one mark ends the year. That is why accuracy matters more than the number of questions you attempt.
What is the Prelims syllabus?
The official syllabus for GS Paper I is one paragraph long. These are its seven heads, with what they mean in practice:
| Official head | What it covers in practice |
|---|---|
| Current events of national and international importance | Schemes, reports, indices, places in the news, science in the news. Read for 12–18 months before the exam |
| History of India and Indian National Movement | Ancient, medieval, art and culture, modern India from 1757 to 1947 |
| Indian and World Geography | Physical, social and economic geography of India and the world, maps |
| Indian Polity and Governance | Constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, public policy, rights issues (see our free Polity notes) |
| Economic and Social Development | Sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives, budget, banking |
| Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change | General issues; no subject specialisation needed |
| General Science | Everyday science, biology, space, defence, IT and biotech in the news |
How much time is left, and how should you use it?
From 1 November 2026 to 23 May 2027 there are about 29 weeks. The plan below assumes 6–7 hours a day. If you have a job, stretch each step by half and drop the third revision.
| Month | Study | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | Polity (full), Economy basics, start daily current affairs | 20–30 MCQs a day on what you read |
| December 2026 | Ancient and medieval history, art and culture, physical geography | Subject tests every Sunday |
| January 2027 | Modern history, Indian geography, environment. Fill the form (13 Jan–2 Feb) | First full-length GS test at month end |
| February 2027 | Science and technology, economy in depth, world geography | 1 full test a week + CSAT practice twice a week |
| March 2027 | Revision 1 of all subjects; current affairs compilation | 2 full tests a week; review every wrong answer |
| April 2027 | Revision 2 from your short notes only | 3 full tests a week; one CSAT test a week |
| 1–22 May 2027 | Revision 3: short notes, traps, past questions | Only PYQs and your own error log; rest on 22 May |
How do you prepare Polity for Prelims 2027?
Polity is the most predictable part of the paper. In our count of every UPSC Polity question from 1996 to 2026 (341 questions), three chapters, Parliament, Supreme Court & High Courts and Fundamental Rights, carry more than a third of all marks. Start with them. Then follow one source, revise it three times and practise past questions chapter by chapter. Our chapter-wise notes show every UPSC PYQ under the topic it tests.
Common mistakes in the last six months
- Changing sources. A new book in March costs you two revisions of the old one.
- Skipping CSAT. Every year some candidates clear the GS cut-off and fail CSAT. Practise it from February.
- Reading current affairs without the static link. UPSC asks the news through the Constitution, the Act or the scheme behind it.
- Only reading, never testing. Accuracy comes from practice and from studying your errors.
